Energy World, one of Milton Keynes’ most ambitious sustainability projects, celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026. Opened in 1986 as the city’s second innovative housing exhibition, it pioneered approaches to energy-efficient housing, renewable energy, climate-responsive design and sustainable communities.
Forty years on, its ideas remain highly relevant as the UK works towards net zero. The anniversary programme, delivered through Heritage Open Days 2026 and continuing into MK60 in 2027, will explore Energy World’s legacy and Milton Keynes’ continuing role in shaping the future of sustainable housing and cities. Events include guided Energy World Walkabouts in Shenley Lodge, led by Tim Skelton, and a screening of Energy World: 40 Years On by Living Archive MK, exploring the exhibition’s pioneering homes, international influence and lasting impact.
