Milton Keynes boasts a unique and influential cycling history.

Find out more

Milton Keynes has a unique and influential cycling history, marked most prominently by its extensive Redway network. Today spanning over 200 miles, these distinctive red-tarmac paths were designed to provide cyclists and pedestrians with safe, traffic-free routes throughout the city.

The Redways form one of the largest planned urban cycle networks in Britain, conceived as part of the town’s ambitious ‘grid and green’ modernist design from the 1970s onward. The Network also incorporates long-distance National Cycle Routes 6 and 51 and five Cultural Routes so everyone can explore our unique city.

Almost sixty years on from those origins, and as part of the celebration of the Lloyds Tour of Britain coming to Milton Keynes on 4th September 2025, the Council and its Archive Partners have delved into their cycling archives to show our love of all things cycling through the decades
